I can read issues and run projects locally, but I keep postponing my first contribution because the repositories feel large.

What I have tried

Read contribution guides
Filtered for good first issue
Reproduced two documentation bugs

Pick a project you already use and start with the smallest issue you can verify. Before coding, leave a short comment with the behavior you reproduced and the change you intend to make.

A maintainer usually values a narrow, well-explained pull request more than an ambitious one. Include:

A link to the issue
The exact behavior before and after
Tests or screenshots when relevant
Any tradeoff you deliberately accepted
